Biology Week Eleven (July 16): Restoring the American Bison

The reintroduction of the American Bison is very important for our ecosystem as a whole. As with any ecosystem, removing one part of it will upset the balance of the whole system because every part has a role in keeping balance and harmony. Now that we are more conscious of our actions, it’s important for us to make strides towards helping increase the population of Bison. Creating safe habitats and alloting more space for the Bison to grow and flourish is very important. Conservation efforts may require raising money by gaining more support and advertising the danger that these Bison are in. Regardless, many people will have to come together to help the Bison to flourish again.

We may be able to reset the balance in Illinois’s attempt at rehabilitating Bison populations. There are many factors here such as big corporations that may want more land, etc. for there own use. Also, the time it would take to reset this balance may take a very long time. However, despite these possible issues, nature is very self-regulating and is extremely resilient. We can adapt to survive even in very difficult conditions. I’ve visited the SF Bison where there are a few herds that roam around. They are doing fairly well, but it would be better if they had more room to expand.

  1. I think it’s a great opportunity for America to be able to reintroduce the bison back into the prairies. Allowing the bison to flourish once again in their natural habitat will bring healing on many levels, including the healing of the land and the healing of Native American history.
